This one day course is all about getting ready for the beekeeping season. Topics include:

  • essential beekeeping equipment, and details to consider when selecting it, assembling, and finishing it
  • standard 'Langstroth' equipment vs. Top-Bar and other hive styles
  • understanding bee space and its role in the design and operation of a modern beehive
  • optional equipment for collecting specialty products like pollen, propolis, and comb honey
  • beekeeping protective gear, high and low cost options, recommendations
  • tools and techniques for monitoring varroa mite levels in your colony
  • best practices for storage of built-out frames of honeycomb and setting up your 'honey house'
  • planning for your honey harvest; exploring different options for processing the honey including mead making!
  • methods and essential information for processing other hive products: propolis, pollen, beeswax

Course offered at our workshop in Hamilton
